Corrosion Testing

Corrosion is the deterioration of materials because of reaction with their environment. Most commonly this refers to the electrochemical oxidation of metals from exposure to an oxidant such as oxygen, also known as rusting. Many materials corrode simply from exposure to moisture in the air, however, various substances or conditions can strongly affect this process. Corrosion may be concentrated locally to form a pit or crack, or it can extend across a wide surface with more or less uniformity.

American Testing Services performs analysis to determine the causes of corrosion and also performs corrosion testing per the following ASTM methods:

  • ASTM A262 – Detecting Susceptibility to Intergranular Attack in Stainless Steels
  • ASTM G48 – Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steels and Related Alloys
