Nathaniel Reveal accepting the Sam Robinson Memorial Award

One of our own was honored last night at the May ASNT (American Society for Non-Destructive Testing) Miami Valley Section meeting. Tim Davis, Calibrations Lab Manager, was selected by the section committee to receive the Sam Robinson Memorial Award, sponsored by Sherwin, Inc. The award has become an annual event to honor Sam Robinson, a long-time member of the ASNT Miami Valley Section, by recognizing an individual who has demonstrated outstanding professional distinction and who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of magnetic particle testing or penetrant testing (MT/PT).

Although Tim could not be present to accept the award, Nathaniel Reveal, Project Manager, was more than happy to present the project on Tim’s behalf.

Tim's portable water washable penetrant system

Tim’s portable water washable penetrant system

Tim constructed a portable system to control water temperature and pressure for on-site water washable penetrant inspections (method A). The system is in full compliance with ASTM E1417. The temperature of the water is regulated by an on demand water heater that is mounted to a two-wheel dolly. Water pressure is controlled by an inline regulator. Both temperature and pressure can be adjusted by hand knobs located on top. The system is also equipped with ISO 17025 calibrated temperature and pressure gages.

The main purpose of this system is to travel to customer locations allowing for water washable penetrant inspections in the field. Keeping this in mind, Tim’s system weights around 55 lbs. and can be easily loaded by one person into the back of a truck or cargo van. To operate the system a water source and 110 outlet is needed.

The use of Tim’s water supply system has enabled penetrant technicians to correctly and reliably control water rinsing operations outside of a lab setting in accordance with ASTM E1417. Inspection times have been reduced by as much as 50%. This system has provided ATS customers a valuable commodity – time. And time is money, money that we can now save our customers.

Great job Tim! Congratulations from the entire ATS team!
